Practicing Mindfulness using Blue Mind Theory | Soul Sesiones

What is the Blue Mind?

Have you ever wondered why the ocean has such a calming effect on our mind, body and soul? Well, if you have taken a trip to the beach when you’ve been feeling stressed, sad or anxious you know the ocean breeze and air does wonders on your mood. Today, we’re covering what is known as the Blue Mind,

“A mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peace, unity and a sense of general happiness when being around water.”

Welcome to Soul Sesiones.

Blue Mind, by Wallace J. Nichols

Before yesterday, I wasn’t too familiar with the Blue Mind, but thanks to a quick trip to Barnes and Noble and skimming through Breathe Magazine, I was introduced to this concept and immediately was called to share with you on Soul Sesiones. I definitely recommend watching the full TedX Talk on YouTube and reading the book, by marine biologist, and bestselling author, Wallace J. Nichols, where he goes in deep on the concept of Blue Mind as he focuses on the proven scientific evidence that being close to bodies of water does in fact promote mental health and happiness.

Blue Mind is inspired by water and elements associated with water, from the color blue to the words we use to describe the sensations we feel when being in or around water. Wallace says to tap into our Blue Mind, we must close down the screens, log out of our phones and walk outside, enjoying the beauty of nature. Then, for example. when we are along the shore, or out on a boat, our minds and bodies have the opportunity to be restored. Our brain switches into a different mode where creativity, insight and connection with others are enhanced. Your breathing and heart rate also slow down and we feel a sense of peace and freedom. This in short is the beautiful concept of the Blue Mind.

Welcome Blue Mind into your daily life

Welcome Blue Mind into your daily life, you can do this by spending time at sea, an open lake, or even taking a bath each week in the comfort of your home, and as it is fall now, you don’t even have to leave your home, you can simply listen to calming water sounds, and drift into a peaceful, relaxing, meditative state in your room. Be present, bring awareness to each breathe and focus on accepting yourself and letting go with the water. Thank you so much for tuning into Soul Sesiones, I hope this educatinal for you it definitely was for me. I am sending you all so much love and wishing you a peaceful and blessed week.
